April 27, 2024The best way to avoid a problem is to prevent it from happening in the first place! Preventing rodent infestation and other pests requires very little effort on your part and will save you a lot of time and money trying to get rid of the problem. Here are some helpful tips to help you prevent rodents and other pests from taking over your home.
1. Tend To Your Yard Regularly
Rodents love living in abandoned areas, so keep your yard clean and free of rodent-attractive items. Clean up fallen leaves and branches, trim the grass, remove dead tree limbs from your property, blow the dust off patio furniture that hasn’t been used all summer, rake up any food or seed husks from under bird feeders etc. Maintain a tidy landscape around your home to dissuade mice and rats from choosing it as their new home!
2. Block Off Unused Entryways
Close off any entryways into your home that have not been in use for an extended period of time. Rodents are very capable of squeezing through tiny cracks and holes, so a solid understanding of your home’s entryways is necessary to keep them out. Check every opening or hole where rodents could possibly get in (including air vents, electrical boxes etc.)
3. Store Food Correctly
Catching rodents early on can help prevent an infestation before it even begins! Keep all food stored tightly in glass containers or metal snap-lids with no openings larger than the size of a dime. It will also help to clean up any spilled foods around the house if there are any small pieces left behind. If you notice that mice have gotten into your home already, check under kitchen sinks and cabinets for crumbs from forgotten snacks and meals. Thoroughly clean these areas to help prevent rodents from getting in.
4. Seal Off All Cracks And Holes
Mice can get through very small open cracks, so it is important that you take a hands-on approach and close off every last crack or hole around your home to ensure mice will not be able to get in. Be sure to check along windowsills, pipes under sinks and other places where pests might be able to squeeze through. You may need a friend’s help with this one! Use caulk or sheet metal screws when appropriate.
5. Keep Your Garbage Cans Closed
Make sure all of your garbage cans have tight lids on them because mice love nothing more than strolling into an unsecured trash can for a free meal! If you don’t want to keep your garbage can indoors all the time, be sure to check it frequently so that mice are not able to get into it.
