There are more than 300 different types of flea species in the United States. They survive by consuming both animal and human blood. While flea bites can be uncomfortable, itchy, and irritating, they can, more importantly, spread several diseases among animals and humans. These include cat scratch disease and flea-borne parasites such as tapeworms. They prefer to bite animals but will bite humans when no animals are readily available. They locate hosts by detecting body heat, movement, and breath. Fleas typically spread disease through contaminated fecal matter, which is scratched into an open wound in the host.

- Fleas can jump as high as one foot in the air, which is about 150 times their height!
- Fleas can burrow just about anywhere. For every flea you find on yourself or your pets, there are many, many more in bedding, furniture, and carpeting.
- Flea eggs take between 21 and 28 days to become adults. The life cycle of fleas ranges from 2 months to 1 year.
